Ph.D. Program

The general rules for the Ph.D. program in economics are the same as for all the Ph.D. programs offered at the campus of QAU. The following list includes some of the additional rules specific to the Ph.D. program offered by the School of Economics.

  1. The Ph.D. program consists of coursework worth 18 credit hours (for the Ph.D students who have M.Phil or equivalent degree in economics), written and oral comprehensive examinations in economic theory and econometrics and thesis.
  2. Coursework worth 42 credit hours (A college or university teacher or a member of the research staff of a research organization who holds an MA/MSc degree but has shown undoubted promise for research).
  3. Each Ph.D course in the School of Economics is worth 3 credit hours.
  4. The minimum period for completion of PhD Program is three years whereas maximum period shall be seven years.
  5. A Ph.D student shall be required to pass a comprehensive examination, immediately after completing the coursework, consisting of a written and an oral part, within three years of admission to the PhD programme.
  6. The comprehensive examinations in economic theory as well as econometrics must be passed within two attempts, failing which a Ph.D. candidate will cease to be student in the Ph.D. program.
  7. Ph.D. students must start working on their theses immediately after completing the coursework and passing the comprehensive examinations.
  8. During research a candidate is to present his/her research in two seminars, one at the beginning of the research and one towards the end.
  9. The Ph.D. thesis is to be evaluated by three examiners from outside Pakistan from the list approved by the Advanced Studies and Research Board (ASRB) of the university. If the foreign examiners reports are accepted by the ASRB, the thesis must be defended successfully before a panel of examiners including two external examiners from Pakistan.
