The Department of Economics was
the first department of the Faculty of Social Sciences established
in the year 1967. Initially, it started its M.Sc. degree program
and later on introduced M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs. So far the department
has produced about 200 M.Phil. graduates and 6 Ph.D. graduates.
Currently about 150 students are enrolled in M.Sc. program, 34 in
M.Phil. program and 30 in Ph.D. program Students and faculty members
are equally encouraged to participate in various conferences held
Pakistan or in any party of the world. In addition the department
also provides opportunities of interaction with economists and researchers
working in various organizations.
The Department has good facilities
for the students. Besides qualified teaching faculty, the department
has courteous and efficient staff providing academic, administrative,
technical and logistic services. It has a large computer lab with
more than forty P-4 computers with latest statistical packages/
software, printing facility and fax. The departmental seminar library
has latest text and research books, journals and data sources. Seminar
hall and classrooms in the department are air-conditioned and carpeted.
Research students are also provided personal computers, books and
data sets as and when needed. In addition the department provides
research funds for the students needing financial support in purchasing
data or collecting primary data.
The strength of the department lies
in core economic theory, quantitative techniques for applied research
and mathematical economics. In addition the department regularly
offers courses in international economics, public sector economics,
labor economics, monetary economics, financial economics, environment
and natural resource economics. Research students are encouraged
to take up challenging research issues in the other areas as well.
The Department has remained relentlessly
committed not to compromise on high standards of teaching. Its superiority
lies in following the latest development in literature. Individual
and collective faculty research has equal precedence with teaching
in the Department. Besides, the faculty members and students of
the department have been actively participating in different local
as well as international seminars and conferences. Students are
also given freedom to organize extracurricular activities on the
campus and outside.
